How it all began
When Francesco Masi and I were two young boys, we used to join a Summer Music Camp in Fontecchio, near L’Aquila, in the Abruzzo Region. Here we attended courses of string orchestra, choir, chamber music and an evening Music Festival with International artists playing for us every night. We were about 50 young musicians from all over Italy, doing everything together for 10 days in an ex Franciscan convent, in the middle of nowhere. Just amazing.
I remember we were waiting the whole year to go to Fontecchio Music Camp, meet old friends, make music together, exchange experiences, stories, checking each other improvements and becoming better musicians. It was the only time I could make music with other people in an orchestra and in a choir and meeting people from other parts of Italy. At that time there was not internet, sms, e-mail, tweets etc. but to keep in touch with those distant friends we used to write letters and postcards in the exciting expectation that was higher each day spent in waiting for a response (we are SO old I know…!).
Quoting Kodaly: “Often a single experience will open the young soul to music for a whole lifetime”.
Well, I think this is really what happened to me: that experience opened my soul to music and it’s probably the reason why I am what I am and I do what I do today.
Then life went on and we became adults. It was august 2005, we were recently graduated in Music and we had a dream: offering the same opportunity we had as children to music students from our region, Puglia, without them going necessarily to North Italy. So it all began. During the first edition we had 15 pupils in total. A little junior string orchestra and a children choir were set up.
And so was born the International Campus Musica, Polignano!
Since then, we grew, improved and add something new every year.
Today we have hundreds of students from all over the World, the official language is English, we are based in a fantastic 3*Hotel with pool, we offer tuition in almost all instrument and voices, we have a Junior Orchestra and Brass Band and a Full Symphonic Orchestra, a Children Choir and a Mixed Choir, “Bel Canto” courses, Stage Movement, a Music Festival open to all, a Website, an Official Photographer, a strong Social Media presence and many friends from all over the places.
But it all began with a big dream of two young friends, plenty of energy and a great passion for music and, most of all, for Puglia, our stunning beautiful region in the middle of the Mediterranean.
